Denver Magician: Good Magic Starts With an Invitation

Planning a party in Denver means making countless decisions. Some of the larger items on the checklist are who to invite, what food will be served, where it will take place, and of course when. The goal is to celebrate the occasion and/or honoree in the best possible way while ensuring that each guest leaves with a memorable, and preferably pleasant, experience. Good food can accomplish this, a beautiful venue adds to it, and good company and conversation are the cherry on top.

Someone attending an event typically does not want to be the star of the show, nor have to “work” in any way. A corporate dinner is an example of an event where even great food, venue, and company can go sour because the air in the room is stiff and guests feel they have to put on a particular face, come up with interesting topics, impress their boss, and more. If one person is in this situation, the likelihood of many is high.

Let’s imagine an event. The only requirements are that the food is great, the venue is rad, and you have found a small group of people to converse with for the evening. (This is a dream scenario for most party planners tasked with enchanting and delighting guests.) You have just wrapped up a nice buffet dinner. A small quartet slowly dims their playing as one of your coworkers takes the stage to inform guests there will be entertainment for the evening. You believe they mean a band, but no, the entertainment is a magician.

Many will react sourly, because we all have a particular perception of what a magician is: the sweaty, tuxedo-stained, so-called charming figure whose words and actions are anything but. He approaches your group with a deck of cards in hand and talks about himself, staring at his shoes and mumbling a fictitious story that isn’t the least bit interesting or engaging. He presents a few card tricks, mildly impressive but similar to ones a child has demonstrated. You applaud and smile in dismay he cannot see through. A few moments pass and he leaves your table to join another, and another, and another. Slowly everyone at the event has experienced this so-called entertainment, but not a single one feels entertained. Each person will have a funny story about the letdown, which bonds the group but casts a shadow over the evening. What was once a beautiful ballroom with a delightful dinner and a short award ceremony has become an awkward, edge-filled story you will carry with you.

Would you prefer that this story ended a bit differently? Are you squirming in your seat at the thought of such an experience? Good, so am I, and I am a magician.

Here is an alternate ending. The magician who approaches you seems like just a guest at the party. He asks for your name and strikes up a conversation that each member of your small group feels welcome to join. After this introduction he informs you that he is the magician hired to roam around and share magic and mentalism with guests. It is up to you whether you accept or object, a truly fair choice.

If you are scared or not interested in magic, he picks up on it right away, thanks you for the brief conversation, and hopes to connect with you again later in the evening. There is no awkwardness, because you never have to tell him you don’t want to see magic, and he is happy to continue to a new group of people. Your evening remains the same, and your perception of magic is not a forced interaction of strange card tricks but a warm entertainer who understands your situation and obliges your implied yes or no.

Now imagine you are a fan of magic, maybe curious, maybe someone who has never seen magic apart from television or the internet. Not only does this seem enticing, he understands that you and the group are excited to participate. The next few moments are suspenseful, surprising, and unlike anything you have ever been a part of. The jokes are spot on, and within five minutes you feel as if you have known him your entire life. You cannot explain what you just saw, and more importantly what you are feeling, but you have the curious idea that you have been a part of something special, unique, fun, and truly entertaining. For the brief moment you spend with this performer, you don’t think about your worries or your stress, and you can let go, sit back, and relax.

That is the key point. In both scenarios you can let go, relax, and be free from concern, whether from the magic itself or from the knowledge that the magician knows you don’t want to participate and kindly leaves you to your company. Magic is not for everybody and should not be marketed towards everybody. The same goes for various sports, musical artists, etc. But regardless of your opinion on magic, you have had an experience with a polished, kind, caring, and understanding individual who lets you pick which road you want to go down.

That is exactly what sets my performances apart from every other magician in Colorado. The approach is so casual yet classy that you feel you can make a true choice and not have to embrace any uncharted territory you are not ready for.

Good magic only works upon acceptance of a clearly stated invitation, one that may not be verbal but is clear. If that invitation is never given to you as a guest, you are left with no choice but to accept what is being pushed at you. This is not fun, enchanting, or charming. It is the exact opposite.

If you are looking for a magician in Denver who understands this fundamental concept, you have got the right place and right dude. Let’s chat about how we can elevate each and every one of your guests’ experience together.

What are people saying About Abner’s Performances?

“Liam, thank you, thank you for an absolutely amazing show at our club's recent lady's luncheon. I'm continuing to receive extremely enthusiastic feedback from those who attended. Several have said this was by far the best lady's lunch program we have had - and this was my 30th!

Your engaging and charismatic personality captivated the group right from the beginning -- the interaction (tricks) with small groups as they checked in really set the stage for what was to come. You were a master at involving our group of 90 into your show!

Liam, plain and simply -- your program was "FUN!"

I'm looking forward to talking with you about a follow up program that focuses not only on your magic but on the techniques of how things work -- why "magic" is "magic!"

- Hal Patterson (Stand-Up Magic Show for 100 person audience at Maggianos, Englewood)

“Liam is a class magician and an amazing human. He went over and beyond for a work event, I had reached out to him for. His flawless execution, the poise, energy, and the way he engages the audience is what makes him a great performer.

Hire Liam and you'll be pleased, I'm sure!”

- Anshul Bhandari (Corporate retirement party for CEO - Sentimental surprise appearance)
